Short Story - Rain. Soil. Home.

The kids were racing each other across the expansive, lush green backyard, dotted with a few old oak trees, when it started to rain. My eight-year-old, Cally, who has always been a bit cautious and disliked getting wet, started to freak out and sprinted the thirty yards or so to take shelter where we were on the back patio. The other four, more adventurous and carefree, embraced the afternoon shower. Leaving little footprints in the moist soil, they laughed, played, and danced. My wife and I hadn’t seen that kind of freedom from them in a very long time. Too many years being stuck in the cramped two-bedroom townhome while our family grew and grew. I looked down at Cally, who was grasping my hand and secretly yearning to go out there and play with her siblings. “Go ahead, baby girl,” I encouraged. Cally released her grip and sprinted out there to join her siblings in the rain festivities. My wife and I made eye contact and seeing the happiness in her beautiful brown eyes, I turned to

X's and Post it Notes

I am seven days into the New Year and the calendar on my cubical wall still shows December. I just am not motivated to change it. My resolution for this year is not to update it. What difference would it make? At the end of the day, it is just another “x” in a square. The x’s form a chain and the chain of x’s in all the calendars that have graced this beige eighties wall goes back nine years. Post-it notes with names and extensions of co-workers who are no longer here adorn this fossil of a fabric. I have not moved most of them because they give the area much needed color, but Emily’s has not moved because it is all I have left of her. Living in San Angeles, A.K.A. "Hero City" has its ups and downs for Stanley J. Kirby. For instance, he lives in a city that has a nice population of super heroes. What could be better that that? There have been occasions that Stanley has met a few super powered individuals. He once ran into the Gamma Ray Gunslinger at Burger Bell. He was ordering churro nachos. Stanley ordered it as well so he could tell his friends that they ordered the same thing. There was this one time right after college when he was driving for Ryde that he picked up Midget Tosser at 20 Four Fitness. Stanley was so enamored; he actually paid The Tosser back. What was cool about that event is that Midget Tosser was on his way to his girlfriend's condo. The Amazonian Astronaut and Midget Tosser were in all the tabloids. It was scandalous. That day Amazonian Astronaut broke off their six year relationship. Midget Tosser added an "M" to his costume, turned to a life of crime and called
